Barbara Kingsolver strikes again! Kingsolver recounts a profound story of Appalachian poverty and corruption with tenderness and authenticity through the young narrative voice of Damon, dubbed Demon Copperfield, for his red hair. Born to a drug-addicted, destitute young mother in Lee County, Virginia, Demon finds family in boyhood neighbour Maggot and his close extended family. Kingsolver's use of language and messages of tenacity and hope had me and held me by page two. Dickens would have been proud.
