One Son Too Many

Mother and Son

Section Title

Mary Emery is a family lawyer whose second marriage has fallen apart and whose eldest son is dead. Can life possibly get worse? She spends her days saving marriages and protecting children—yet could neither save nor protect her own. Mary has recurring nightmares, sees her psychologist more than her best friend, and is in a part-time relationship with a work colleague. She lives with her youngest son, Charlie (Chet). A strong student and athlete, Chet struggles with his own loss, social challenges, gender expression, and his distant mother.

One night, Mary feels she is being watched. The following week, her house is broken into. Soon after, Mary and Chet spend Christmas with her middle son, Matt, only to realize that their family is not the only one with dark secrets. There, she also finds letters written by her firstborn while he was serving in Afghanistan, and she suffers an accident; at home, her car is vandalized: the word BITCH, spray-painted on its door. Wanting more, her love interest, Richard, can only stay by her side so long. Will she inevitably lose him just as she must plan her best friend’s holiday engagement party? Will she find peace before she loses what she has left?
